SILK TABBI SCARF TITLE: “Stamps from the Past”
DIMENSIONS: 150cmx50cm (59 inchesx20 inches) .
PHOTOGRAPHY: March 2017, Australia.
STORY: Collection of early Stamps. Creating this scarf took me on a journey through my childhood, going through my Grandfathers stamps and selecting these to highlight as a silk scarf. From 1850 until 1913 Australian States issued their own individual postage stamps. Most portrayed portraits of Queen Victoria. The early Tasmanian issues featured the state’s name given by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642. He titled the land ‘Van Diemen’s Land’ to honour his patron Anthony Van Deimen.

THE SILK STORY: Silk is known as the Queen of fabrics: Natural sheen that never diminishes/ soft, light and luxurious / Cool in Summer – Warm in Winter/ Absorbing perspiration yet letting skin breathe/ Promoting skin rejuvenation/ Hypoallergenic/ Eco-Friendly/ Biodegradable/ Easily Washed/ great tensile strength and durability. Confucius and Chinese legend narrate that around 3000BC the 14 year old Empress Leizu, wife of the Yellow Emperor, discovered Silk when a cocoon fell into her tea cup. She then developed the art of raising silk worms (Sericulture) and became known as the Goddess of Silk in Chinese Mythology. Being an exquisite, precious fibre, for many millennia, it was one of the most zealously guarded secrets in history.
CARE: Enjoy your silk garment – our printing techniques produce colours that will not run or fade. With fundamental care, this silk scarf will maintain it’s vibrant colours and quality ‘Silk’ feel for many years. As Silk is a natural fibre avoid drying in direct sunlight. Also, avoid contact with bleaches or solvents with alcohol such as some hairsprays.
HAND WASHING: Preferred: Use lukewarm water and a mild non-alkaline soap such as baby shampoo. Avoid soaking and rinse with a few tablespoons of distilled white vinegar added to the clear water. Avoid wringing or twisting and roll in a towel then hang to dry. Avoid using dryers.
IRONING: Most wrinkles can be removed by hanging the scarf in the shower and letting humidity work. While the scarf is hanging a steam iron can be used carefully avoiding wetting locally. If necessary use a cool iron setting (Silk Setting) on the back of the damp scarf – avoid too much heat.
